If you're like me, you suddenly realize...CRAP...it's December 7 and you haven't even THOUGHT about your Christmas cards yet. Never fear! I am offering last minute mini-sessions this weekend only! For only $75, you will receive a 30 minute session, 3-5 proofs posted in an online gallery, and one digital photo with full printing rights. A DVD of the entire session can be purchased for an additional $150.

Sessions will be done at Huntsman Lake in Springfield, Virginia on Saturday, December 10 and Sunday, December 11.

A couple of weekends ago, I was invited to photograph the wedding of Loretta and Vernon. The wedding was in Columbia, SC, and I had never been there before, so I was excited to see a new part of the country! Columbia is gorgeous, y'all. My cousin, his wife, and their twin boys live in Columbia and they gave us a tour of the area. The people are so friendly, the food is FANTASTIC, and the weather is perfect. (HOT HOT HOT.)

The wedding? So sweet. You could really tell how much Vernon loved Loretta. Congratulations Vernon and Loretta! I wish you the best! Here are a few of the photos from the day.

If y'all know anything about me, you probably know that I LOVE dogs. My dog, Tater, is like a child to me. My photography assignment today was one of my most exciting yet! Today I took some photos of Steve and his dogs, Roxy and Marlowe. Roxy and Marlowe are termite and bed bug detection dogs. These dogs are quite good at their job too! Here are a few of the dogs in action. Check out the company Steve, Roxy, and Marlowe work for here. They actually inspected my house before we moved in 4 years ago, so I can vouch that they do a great job!

Marlowe is such a handsome boy and was so sweet.

And Roxy is an exuberant and sweet girl.

I had an engagement session this past weekend for a sweet couple that I met a few months ago. When we were first meeting, they told me they met at church. I knew that they lived in the area, so I asked what church. Imagine my surprise when they said they went to First Baptist Church of Alexandria. That's where Shon and I go! (Well...it's been a little while since we've been there, but that's where we're members.) It's a pretty big church, so that explains why we'd never met beforehand.

Anyway, we met in Old Town Alexandria for an engagement session and boy was it hot out! We got a bunch of great shots and I want to share a few with y'all. You can really tell how much they love each other. :)

A couple of weeks ago, I photographed the wedding of Frank and Christine. Y'all, it was the most perfect day for a wedding. The bride and her mother did all the decor inside the Briar Patch. Y'all, it looked like a pro did it. I LOVED it. Don't you just love the initial made of moss they created?

The groom, apparently, took dance lessons as a kid. As a surprise to the groom, the bridal party performed the Thriller Dance. It was so entertaining!

Y'all, I can DEAL with this weather! I even got out for a little walk during my lunch break today. When I got home from work today, Tater and I headed out to the backyard and planted the seedlings for my vegetable garden. This year, I am growing spinach, green beans, kale, and carrots. I may end up growing some tomatoes, but I haven't made my mind up on that one. Tater was a great supervisor today. In order to do her best supervising, however, she had to bring out her prized yellow squeaky ball.

During one of the recent blizzards (yes, that's plural) we had, we noticed some little friends in our backyard. I guess they were pretty hungry and hoped for some handouts. I'm gonna be honest, I grabbed the photos from the comfort of behind my fence. I tried to get brave and walk around so I was on the other side of the fence....but....then I had this vision of me upsetting the big 8 point buck. In my mind, he then charged at me. Soooooooo I IMMEDIATELY ran back inside my house. Not kidding.

A couple of weekends ago, I photographed the PRO-telligent Annual Gala at the Mandarin Oriental, Washington, DC. It was a pretty spectacular venue! The party planners employed an asian theme, and they did an amazing job! Check out some of the details...

They had a chinese dragon, ribbon dancers, and a man who cut silhouettes of party-goers out of paper in less than 60 seconds!

I subscribe to an email list from Jessica Claire. She's an extremely well-known photographer in CA who just HAPPENED to grow up in Raleigh, NC. Just like me! And...she went to NC State...just like my brother. Anyway, I find her work truly inspirational and I just LOVE perusing her website.

Yesterday, she sent out an email to the list-serve and I just had to post part of it. Her message is applicable to us all, no matter what career you've chosen. Find what you are best at and give it all you've got!

"Early on in my career as a photographer, I learned that other photographers were far better than I was both technically and creatively. It seemed that no matter what I did, someone else was already two steps ahead of me. As time went by and I really started learning more about photography myself, I realized that having other people be better than me was not discouraging but inspiring! As I looked at various websites and blogs, I started to understand that the photographers I looked up to the most were the ones who excelled at something specific, such as off-camera lighting, clean portraits, or quirky poses. I started thinking about the person that I was becoming and which aspects of my personality I wanted to play up as the strongest in a first impression with a new client. The more I would review the images I came home with Saturday after Saturday, the more the shots with flare and backlighting would jump out at me. "These are the kinds of images I want to make", I would say to myself.

So I did.

Week in and week out, I practiced with backlighting and flare until I knew that I would be able to shoot those kinds of images any time that I wanted and do it the BEST. I may never be an expert at off-camera lighting, or clean portraits, or quirky poses, but I had finally found something that really resonated with me. Not only was the time of day right before sunset my favorite, but I learned to control that kind of light to give me exactly the effect I was looking for in camera. Over time, shooting consistent images of that nature became the thing that I do best, and ultimately became my "signature" shots.

JJ is 2 years old!!

Last weekend, I had an awesome time photographing a sweet and peppy little boy named JJ. He is about to turn 2 years old and he is such a smart little boy! His mama warned me that he was always on the go, and boy was he! SO much energy!

Meet JJ!

He was such a ham and was totally turned on for the camera. I saw nothing but smiles from him all day!

JJ was very silly and kept screaming as loud as he could! His mama said he knows he's not allowed to do it at home, so he gets it all out on the playground.

This is one of my favorites from the session.

JJ's parents love him so much! Daddy went down the slide with him and Mama went squirrel hunting with him!

JJ's parents taught him sign language and here he is demonstrating "danger." His mama told him to be careful that he didn't fall of the side of the playground and JJ automatically signed "danger."

Today I had the pleasure of taking some photos for JJ and his mommy and daddy. I had a fantastic time chasing this little guy around. He had SO much energy and so much personality...and he was pretty cute to boot!

Such a happy boy! Shon and I met JJ's mommy and daddy when we played softball together for our church. They are a really fun couple and both have the best southern accent! Not gonna lie, my accent may or may not have come back a bit while I was with them.

This weekend, I had the honor of being a bridesmaid in the wedding of one of my best friends from college, Julia. It was absolutely the most fun wedding I've ever been to!! Julia and Eric have been together since college and we were all very excited to see them get married and start their new life together.

As one of our gifts, Julia paid for us girls to have our makeup done by Crystal Jo. She did SUCH a fantastic job, and she was so much fun as well!

Julia got the flowers from Don's Dahlias in Leesburg, VA. They were absolutely stunning!!! Before the wedding, the girls put together the bouquets for the tables.

Even sweet Emily had her makeup done!

Devon did our hair, and boy does she have talent. She can poof hair like nobody's business. Thank you so much Devon!

Such a fun and creative first dance. Speaking of dancing, their wedding band, The mustangs, were ABSOLUTELY fabulous. They made the wedding SO much fun!!! There wasn't a single missed note, and they kept everyone on the dance floor. Even Shon. THAT'S how great they are.

This weekend, I had the pleasure of shooting some headshots for an up and coming actress. She and I actually go back pretty far. Jessie is the daughter of my high school band instructor, so I've known here since she was just a little thing. Dare Days

While in the Outer Banks, Shon's mama and I explored Dare Day. It was really cool. Kind of like a big flea market!! We stayed at my aunt's condo in Manteo SMACK in the middle of everything. It was SUCH a great location, a fantastic condo, and an awesome weekend.

Before the pictures of Dare Day, I had to include a few of my flowers. I can't recall what kind of flower this is, but I love it. This is actually just a tiny part of it. I wanted to test the macro function that I tried the other day.

And here...is my prized lavender. I LOVE lavender.

And onto dare day. I couldn't pick which picture I liked better, but this guy was making ice cream using a john deer powered ice cream machine. Which is your fave? This one?

They had a produce stand that Shon's mom hit up. These peaches looked good, but they weren't quite ripe, so I didn't purchase any.

This was the coolest thing. A little "train" pulled behind a golf cart.

If I was a kid, I would've LOVED this thing.

They had bands playing throughout the day. I loved this older guy.

Loved this little girl's hair.

This girl looked like she was having a great time. She was licking her lips at the sight of the ice cream stand.

I took this picture 100% for my mom. This is one of the great crafts they had for sale.

Here is a quick preview of the reception site for Shon's cousin. They had the reception at 108 budleigh. It was gorgeous. On our tour around Dare Day, we stopped by the reception site to check it out since it was LITERALLY across the street from where we were staying.

At the end, Shon's grandma bought me two cheerwine.

I was checking out a couple of local photographer's blogs today, and I found this one that I knew I needed to share. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm going to give it a shot later today. Enjoy!

UPDATE: I TRIED IT!!! See the results below...

Baby Sister gave me this ring for being her matron of honor in her wedding. This is as close in as I could get the normal way...

And here's how close you can get with the above technique. She is right it is kind of tricky. You have to hold the camera really still. I just love the detail on the side of the ring. It's gorgeous.

I planted a mini-garden in my backyard and here is my first tomato bud!!!

Caroline started the day by getting her hair done.

Isn't it gorgeous?!

She looks like a princess!

Then, the girls came over to freshen up their makeup and get ready to head to the church.

When we got to the church, I took a few photos of the guys.

Jordan, the best man, had his boutonniere pinned on first.

While I was taking some photos of the guys, one of the girls ran to get me and said, Caroline needs you NOW! She needs you to take pictures of her putting her dress on. So I ran upstairs (like the good sister I am) and got a few shots.

I have the most beautiful sister ever.

Courtney had a great idea. To get rid of Caroline's nerves, Courtney made Caroline play sudoku on her iphone. It worked quite well!

The florist did a FANTASTIC job. The bouquets were absolutely gorgeous!

Now that my baby sister is married off, I can show you the bridal portraits of her we took last month. She was the most BEAUTIFUL bride I've ever seen and the wedding was TONS of fun!

My sister and law and I both have bridal portraits that look like this, so my mom requested this one for her collection.

Shon and I stayed at my friend Lauren's house. This is Lauren's cat, Sampson. He loves me. A lot.

The weekend began with Ben's Naval Commissioning ceremony. I had never been to one before, but I thought it was really cool.

I had the pleasure of doing a photoshoot for an army wife today. Her husband is stationed in Afghanistan, so she decided she wanted to give him a fun anniversary gift. We took some awesome boudoir photos for her hubby, and I think he will LOVE them. Homegirl is SERIOUSLY fun too. She and I actually met through my sister's blog.

We met at the Liason Hotel in DC. Holy COW y'all. SUPER chic hotel. We had so much fun, and I really hope her husband enjoys the photos.

This past weekend, I attended my good friend, Nicole's, wedding. Nicole and I have become fast friends while working together. She's one of those friends that you INSTANTLY click with. From the very beginning, I've been able to be myself around her. I was so excited to see her get married to Chris. The wedding was gorgeous, but most stunning was Nicole. She looked FANTASTIC. Here are the photos from Jen and Steve's photoshoot.

Recently, I've been playing around with storyboard templates. I like the way they let you really tell a story with the pictures. (Hence the name storyboard. duh.)
They were so clearly in love. It was really sweet.

This is probably one of my favorites from the entire session. I drove past this building before our session and it stuck out in my mind, so I'm glad we got a few fun pictures in front of it.

Jen told me that she and Steve get photographs made every year for their anniversary. What a FANTASTIC tradition.

This is why I love Alexandria so much. I LOVE being near the water.

This is my absolute favorite storyboard. I loved the brick wall as a backdrop.

They were so patient with me as I made them walk all over Old Town.

I've also been playing around with textures a bit. So here's a quick before and after.

So today, I got to shoot some family photos for the Turner Family. They are some great friends of ours that we met at our church. We took a little trip to the tidal basin to go see the Cherry Blossoms. After looking for a parking spot for a good while, we found a GREAT spot. It was out past Hain's Point and there weren't too many folks around, so it was perfect. Here's one of my favorites from the day.

Dinner with Friends | Springfield VA Photographer

Tonight, Shon and I had dinner with our friends, The Turners and The Isetts. We had such a great time and loved catching up as we rarely see them anymore.

Meet little James. He is one of the Turner's 2 HANDSOME sons. He is a ball of energy and is definitely all boy. He is quite the entertaining little guy!!

And this is Zion, their sweet puppy dog. He and Tater would probably be BFF if they saw each other enough.

The Turners have graciously allowed me to practice my photography skills on them, so next weekend, we will be taking a trip to the Cherry Blossoms in DC to get some photos of their family. I'm psyched.

I got a new zoom lens in the mail yesterday, and I've been having lots of fun playing around with it. Now, this MAY seem like two boring pictures of birds, BUT here's the kicker. When I was taking these photos, I had Tater on a leash with me.

Now.
1. Birds are afraid of dogs.
2. Dogs want to eat birds.

THAT shows you just how far this new lens zooms in. I was able to get two pretty close up shots without scaring the birds away.

AWESOME.
